In a nutshell: I have a number of animated movies or anime series on plain old 480p DVDs that look very good on my three HDTV displays (native 720p Pioneer plasma, 1080p Samsung LCD, or 1080p "e-Shift/faux-K" JVC projector) when played through a Blu-Ray player, but noticeably poorer in picture quality after I've ripped them to MKV and then compressed down with HandBrake, which I've undertaken to doing on a large scale in the past few months after setting up a 10TB NAS and a dedicated Plex server in my home network. Which is obviously ideal, but not the point here. Not sure if this is the right forum for this question/issue, which I imagine to be a standard one, but all searches (on this forum or a general Google search) only turn up the suggestion of getting HD source material in the first place.
